Captain’s Log…Trekfest 2014 – The First Nerd Trip

Welcome to our first flashback Friday.  Today I (Betsy) will take you on a magical journey…to Iowa.  Iowa?  Surely you jest!  Alas, gentle readers, in the heartland of America lies a nerdy treasure that must be shared.

In 1984 the town of Riverside Iowa sent a letter to Gene Roddenberry asking if Riverside could be the birthplace of the future Starfleet Captain James Tiberius Kirk.   Roddenberry said yes and the annual town festival of Trekfest was born.

Trekfest is part small town festival part Star Trek convention.  Don’t believe me? Take a look at the photos of the parade.

Honestly, it was so nerdy and bursting with small town pride.  After the parade we went to the Star Trek Museum/historical society to check out the exhibits.

After the museum we walked to the future historical marker that claimed Riverside the future birthplace of James T. Kirk.

I then bought the t-shirt.
